Ekström wins in the rain

Audi pilot Mattias Ekström, 2004 and 2007 DTM champion did it again. After his success at the Nürburgring, the Swede also won in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, making the triple Audi victory, a truly special occasion for Ingolstadt, complete. Also in an Audi, Martin Tomczyk crossed the finishing line as runner up after catching up sensationally from a 14th starting position, strengthening his lead in the driver ratings to an advantage of 9 points.

Italian Edoardo Mortara (Audi) came in third after 45 race laps, with the DTM rookie achieving his second podium place in a row. After the race in Brands Hatch, this is already the second triple success for Audi. Bruno Spengler (Mercedes Benz), however, suffered bad luck – The Canadian was just one point behind Tomczyk prior to the race. Spengler started into the race as second and led the field for several laps. Technical problems caused the 28 year old to quit the race in the 42nd lap.
Ekström, accepting his 16th DTM winner trophy, explained after the race: „My car was just perfect, I was able to drive completely relaxed. The track was very slippery, but I am used to that from Sweden which certainly helped. The beginning of the season wasn’t so great but now it has considerably improved, making weekends like it very enjoyable for me.”
Enthusiastic fans watched Gary Paffett (Mercedes Benz) putting his heart and soul into catching up after technical problems prevented the 2005 DTM champion from taking part in Saturday’s timed training. The Brit started as 18th in this year’s eight out of ten DTM races and finished as best AMG Mercedes C Class driver in fourth place. “After the qualifying, I really didn’t count on coming in as best Mercedes Benz pilot, so I am thrilled with the result. If I wouldn’t have touched off Timo Schneider, I could have even made the second place”, so Paffett.

Christian Vietoris, also in a Mercedes, ended up as fifth in the Magdeburg Börde, giving him cause for celebrations over his best result of the season. The reward for the 22 year old: four points for the championship. Audi pilot Miguel Molina could not realise his first pole position into a victory but still collected a point for the table as eighth behind Rockenfeller (Audi) and Maro Engel (Mercedes-Benz). Tomczyk remains top of the table. The man from Rosenheim widened the gap and now sports 58 points in his account ahead of Spengler with 49. A total of 65,000 spectators followed the eighth DTM race of the season.
In changeable weather conditions, various fringe series offered additional entertainment at its best throughout the weekend. The first Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup race on Saturday was won by Mateusz Lisowski ahead of Stefano Proette and Jann-Hendrik Ubben. Aditya Patel from India decided the second race, with Moritz Oestreich and Lisowski following.

The Porsche Carrera Cup saw Nick Tandy as the winner ahead of Rene Rast and Nicki Thiim, the presentation race of the Formula BMW Talent Cup was won by 15 year old Stefan Wackerbauer. The two podium line ups in the Seat Leon Supercopa couldn’t have been any more different to each other. While the first race was won by Elia Erhart ahead of Shane Williams and Gabor Weber, experienced driver Thomas Marschall emerged victorious from the second ahead of Petr Fulin and Mario Dablander.

There was no time for boredom even off the track - Nick Heidfeld, Timo Glock and Kai Ebel were among the guests.
